Centre for Newcomers Moving Forward Classes

Now recruiting for the next Moving Forward intake with classes to start on July 23, 2012. This program is for newcomers who are unemployed with limited work experience, skills and education. We provide training in literacy, life skills, essential skills, job readiness, as well as training for work towards a baking or meat cutting career.

 

The main requirements we are looking for in candidates are:

  • An interest in a baking or meat cutting career
  • CLB minimum of 5 in Speaking/Listening and 3 in Reading/Writing
  • 9 – 12 yrs of schooling (we can consider less but cannot accept university degrees)
  • Commitment to attending a 32-week program and full time employment for 6-month follow-up
  • Open to permanent residents or citizens

Exam Study Groups

Canadian Registered Nurse Group 

 

This group will run on Tuesdays from June 26 to September 25 from 1:00 to 4:30pm. The goal is to assist internationally educated nurses in preparing for the examination required as part of the licensing process with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA).


Science Group
 
Are you an internationally educated engineer, geologist or geophysicist planning to become licensed in Alberta? Join the National Professional Practice Exam Study Groups at no cost! 
 
The Wednesday group will run April 18 - July 11 and the Saturday group April 21 - July 14.  The focus of the study groups will be on assisting the participants in preparing for the exam required as part of the licensing process with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). 
 
Medical Group
 
Join the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science Study Group on Saturdays between June 16 and October 6. The focus will be on assisting internationally educated Medical Laboratory Technologists in preparing for the exam required as part of the licensing process with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science.

Marie Eriksen Award Applications

Women who are immigrants to Alberta who are attending school in order to return to their pre-migration field of work are eligible to apply for a Maria Eriksen Every Woman Can Bursary. Applicants must be in financial need and currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution.

 

Please note that the bursary will be paid to the school where the recipient is taking classes and cannot be paid to the person. (A bursary is similar to a grant or a scholarship and does not need to be paid back.)  Immigrant women from anywhere in Alberta are encouraged to apply. They do not need to be IAF loan recipients.

 

Applications must be submitted directly to The Calgary Foundation; the deadline is June 15, 2012. (IAF cannot accept applications.)

Moving Forward: Training for Employability 

This 32 week program put on by the Centre for Newcomers is designed for immigrants who have limited formal education in their first language, and low levels of Essential skills and English literacy. Clients will focus on the development and use of essential skills specific to entry level jobs in baking or retail meat cutting in a supermarket or related business. Learning English with CBC Radio

An exciting new resource for ESL teachers and learners in Alberta was recently launched by CBC Edmonton and Alberta Employment and Immigration. The project can be found at www.cbc.ca/Edmonton/eal.The website resources are made up of two types of audio stories, each supported by ESL learning materials.

Newscasts (Weekly News Stories) The stories in this section are shorter. They focus on the current events of the day. They are suitable for students who have reached CLB 4.

Monthly Stories (Monthly Feature Stories)The stories in this section are a bit longer. They feature items of general human interest. One of these stories is uploaded each month and they are suitable for students who have reached CLB 6+ and for teachers looking for materials to use with higher level classes.

The audio files and documents can all be downloaded and kept on your computer absolutely free! The audio files are in MP3 format and will play on most computer audio players. Immigrant Professionals in the Environment Sector

CCIS is offering a new training opportunity for Immigrant Professionals in the Environment Sector. The Program includes 6 weeks of sector-specific classroom training designed by environmental employers, skilled immigrants, and employment counselors, and an 8-week work experience placement to gain industry experience. Immigrant Bridging Program for Foreign Trained Teachers

The Transition to Alberta Classrooms (TAC) program will help foreign trained teachers for whom English is an additional language prepare for employment. Immigrant Seniors Website

Calgary Catholic Immigration Services is one of the partnering agencies working on the immigrant seniors website (www.immigrantseniors.ca) and they need to update the site with correct information that indicates which places offer ESL type programs/opportunities that are either senior specific or senior friendly. They also need to know if there is a fee attached and what the basic outline of said classes or opportunities might be. Immigrant Youth Volunteer Program

The Youth Volunteer Program (YVP) works to help immigrant youths discover what a difference they can make to their communities through volunteering opportunities all over the city from festivals and homeless shelters, to charities and marathons etc. Through volunteering, their goal is to create a more welcoming, culturally-competent community for everyone. Our program primarily targets permanent resident youths aged 14-18 who are at risk for social isolation and who maybe do not know how to get involved and meet new friends.

CCIS Host Program Volunteers Needed

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society is in need of volunteers for the Host Program. The Host Program helps newcomers integrate and resettle in Canada. Many of these newcomers are government assisted refugees and others are independent migrants. Host volunteers lend support, help with language barriers and introduce newcomers to their new community.

The Host Program recruits and trains volunteer hosts and then establishes compatible matches between them and new immigrants of all ages. The matches are based on criteria such as similar interests, family size, age and profession. Anyone can volunteer as long as they are at least 17 years of age and can commit to volunteering for 3 -4 hours a week divided to suit the volunteer and needs of the family. Ethos Youth and Family

 

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society's SOT program has a new extension: Ethos Youth & Family. They are aiming to provide culturally sensitive support for immigrant and refugee children and youth ages 3 to 18, and their families addressing post-traumatic stress related to migration, resettlement, socio-economic barriers, and isolation. We are now ready to accept referrals and/or answer any questions you may have regarding this new service. We are also happy to provide informational materials and presentations to elaborate on our service and the population we serve. We strive to promote health and healing, in children, youth, and their families. 

We offer a variety of services including individual and group therapy, as well as parent support and education. In addition we deliver outreach educational services to schools, professionals, and community organizations. The program counsellors deliver individual and parental support to attend to underlying issues of trauma, migration, and acculturations stress. Services are available by referral from teachers, social workers, or other community service providers involved with immigrant and refugee youth and family. Volunteer Cultural Interpreters and Translators Needed

Immigrant Services Calgary is looking for volunteers to fill the positions of ‘Cultural Interpreter’ and ‘Cultural Translator’. These volunteers will assist newcomers to Canada with their transition to a new life by either providing assistance with the verbal exchange of words form one language to another or by translating important written legal documents. Volunteers must be fluent in English and at least one other language and must be culturally sensitive. Some daytime availability is required for the position of Cultural Interpreter and Cultural Translators must have intermediate level computer skills. Contact: Volunteer Coordinator at 403-538-8355.

The Calgary Workers' Resource Centre offers an Employment Rights, Obligations and Benefits Education Program. If your team, clients or students would benefit from more knowledge about their work-related rights, obligations and benefits, then contact the Calgary Workers’ Resource Centre! Subjects covered include: Alberta employment standards, employment insurance, human rights in the workplace, and workers’ compensation. The goal of Calgary AfterSchool is to increase the number of quality after school programming opportunities for youth ages 6 – 16.
