Moving Forward: Training for Employability 

This 32 week program put on by the Centre for Newcomers is designed for immigrants who have limited formal education in their first language, and low levels of Essential skills and English literacy. Clients will focus on the development and use of essential skills specific to entry level jobs in baking or retail meat cutting in a supermarket or related business. ISCC is pleased to offer  the updated version of the “Services for Immigrants in Calgary“.  This free brochure is available in two versions  - Multilingual -  English, Chinese Punjabi, Urdu, Spanish and Arabic and a French/English version.

Learning English with CBC Radio

An exciting new resource for ESL teachers and learners in Alberta was recently launched by CBC Edmonton and Alberta Employment and Immigration. The project can be found at www.cbc.ca/Edmonton/eal.The website resources are made up of two types of audio stories, each supported by ESL learning materials.

Newscasts (Weekly News Stories) The stories in this section are shorter. They focus on the current events of the day. They are suitable for students who have reached CLB 4.

Monthly Stories (Monthly Feature Stories)The stories in this section are a bit longer. They feature items of general human interest. One of these stories is uploaded each month and they are suitable for students who have reached CLB 6+ and for teachers looking for materials to use with higher level classes.

The audio files and documents can all be downloaded and kept on your computer absolutely free! The audio files are in MP3 format and will play on most computer audio players. Immigrant Professionals in the Environment Sector

CCIS is offering a new training opportunity for Immigrant Professionals in the Environment Sector. The Program includes 6 weeks of sector-specific classroom training designed by environmental employers, skilled immigrants, and employment counselors, and an 8-week work experience placement to gain industry experience. Immigrant Bridging Program for Foreign Trained Teachers

The Transition to Alberta Classrooms (TAC) program will help foreign trained teachers for whom English is an additional language prepare for employment. Immigrant Seniors Website

Calgary Catholic Immigration Services is one of the partnering agencies working on the immigrant seniors website (www.immigrantseniors.ca) and they need to update the site with correct information that indicates which places offer ESL type programs/opportunities that are either senior specific or senior friendly. They also need to know if there is a fee attached and what the basic outline of said classes or opportunities might be. Immigrant Youth Volunteer Program

The Youth Volunteer Program (YVP) works to help immigrant youths discover what a difference they can make to their communities through volunteering opportunities all over the city from festivals and homeless shelters, to charities and marathons etc. Through volunteering, their goal is to create a more welcoming, culturally-competent community for everyone. Our program primarily targets permanent resident youths aged 14-18 who are at risk for social isolation and who maybe do not know how to get involved and meet new friends.

CCIS Host Program Volunteers Needed

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society is in need of volunteers for the Host Program. The Host Program helps newcomers integrate and resettle in Canada. Many of these newcomers are government assisted refugees and others are independent migrants. Host volunteers lend support, help with language barriers and introduce newcomers to their new community.

The Host Program recruits and trains volunteer hosts and then establishes compatible matches between them and new immigrants of all ages. The matches are based on criteria such as similar interests, family size, age and profession. Anyone can volunteer as long as they are at least 17 years of age and can commit to volunteering for 3 -4 hours a week divided to suit the volunteer and needs of the family. Ethos Youth and Family


Calgary Catholic Immigration Society's SOT program has a new extension: Ethos Youth & Family. They are aiming to provide culturally sensitive support for immigrant and refugee children and youth ages 3 to 18, and their families addressing post-traumatic stress related to migration, resettlement, socio-economic barriers, and isolation. We are now ready to accept referrals and/or answer any questions you may have regarding this new service. We are also happy to provide informational materials and presentations to elaborate on our service and the population we serve. We strive to promote health and healing, in children, youth, and their families. 

We offer a variety of services including individual and group therapy, as well as parent support and education. In addition we deliver outreach educational services to schools, professionals, and community organizations. The program counsellors deliver individual and parental support to attend to underlying issues of trauma, migration, and acculturations stress. Services are available by referral from teachers, social workers, or other community service providers involved with immigrant and refugee youth and family. Volunteer Cultural Interpreters and Translators Needed

Immigrant Services Calgary is looking for volunteers to fill the positions of ‘Cultural Interpreter’ and ‘Cultural Translator’. These volunteers will assist newcomers to Canada with their transition to a new life by either providing assistance with the verbal exchange of words form one language to another or by translating important written legal documents. Volunteers must be fluent in English and at least one other language and must be culturally sensitive. Some daytime availability is required for the position of Cultural Interpreter and Cultural Translators must have intermediate level computer skills. Contact: Volunteer Coordinator at 403-538-8355.

Calgary Workers' Resource Centre

The Calgary Workers' Resource Centre offers an Employment Rights, Obligations and Benefits Education Program. If your team, clients or students would benefit from more knowledge about their work-related rights, obligations and benefits, then contact the Calgary Workers’ Resource Centre! Subjects covered include: Alberta employment standards, employment insurance, human rights in the workplace, and workers’ compensation. These workshops may be particularly of interest to members of vulnerable populations including new immigrants and ESL students, Temporary Foreign Workers, youth, Aboriginal workers, persons with disabilities, and unemployed/underemployed workers. Calgary AfterSchool

The goal of Calgary AfterSchool is to increase the number of quality after school programming opportunities for youth ages 6 – 16. The programs are available between the hours of 3 and 6 pm on weekdays throughout the year. To find programs near your home or school, go to theCalgary.ca/afterschool web site.
